I checked with my local dealer and its £499 for G3 paint protection.

I think the paint protection will be helpful in longer term and in harsh weather conditions. and chipping

Any views please? is £499 reasonable?

All volvos paint has a layer of clear lacquer on top now , the paint is well protected . A regular polish would help though , Nothing protects modern thin paint against stone chips although it is not a particular problem with volvos .
It makes you wonder why they still charge extra for metallic as the two processes are on every car now .

Really comes down to ensuring a constant finish, including some colours being more costly to produce or difficult to finish.

Even with all of this being said clearcoat can only do so much in day to day driving. Fresh clean paint beads and sheets better than any product though but sadly is to vulnerable. Hence...

Paint protection is still being necessary, sadly many dealer products are poorly prepared (following poor wash methods) and equally poor application. Ceramic/quartz are okay if applied well following good preparation. Most ceramic products are between 40-100 to purchase in real terms.

I am not sure how good the Volvo clear coat is but on my last Mercedes it was very good. Polished the car a couple of times a year with Meguiare's and after 4 years and 58,000 miles it was still very good and I do not garage my car. Cannot comment on additional paint protection as I have never had any.
