Default Apple carplay help

First post, and I need some techie help please!

I have Apple carplay on my new XC90 but have an issue with my music. I have a 16GB iPhone 6s, the phone is used primarily for work so I cannot get much music on. I have a 32GB iPod with my music on but cannot use this when I have the 6s running Carplay, so I've signed up for the three month trial on Apple Music but I'm concerned about data usage when streaming. I'm thinking about getting a data only SIM and using the car's modem to fix the cost but I'm unsure if the iPhone will pick it's data up via the modem?

I also cannot connect the car to the hotspot on my 6s, it only picked the phone up once and I got it connected but it will not pick up the phone since, anyone else had this problem?

Many thanks

I haven't tried it but if you install your own SIM card you can enable the car's wifi hotspot and link your iPhone to it. That way you'll utilise the data connection via your own SIM card in the boot.. Note however that when you install your own SIM the built-in SIM is deactivated and all data is therefore transferred via your data plan. This includes VoC, RTTI and the apps. Note also that car's SIM connections are limited to 3G.

I can't help re the 6S hotspot problem but my Android phone which was connecting okay has stopped connecting in the last couple of days. I've established that it's not the phone so I'll be asking the dealer for advice tomorrow.

Thanks for the reply, this is going to need a bit more thought to get the best out of this! Just want to check that the iPhone will pick up it's data from the car when Carplay is running as I have to connect by the 'special' USB, but I understand your logic.

Any idea how much data I am likely to use each month with the Volvo services thay I am effectively getting for free now?

For what it's worth I use car play and Apple Music /Spotify. I bought an O2 sim last year with 12gb data preloaded which lasts for a year. Still have a couple of gb left, but I also use phone data. Anyway I just want to buy a replacement and the same sim is on offer for £48, so not a great deal to lose if you want to experiment.

I've measured my use of VoC, RTTI and Weather at less than 50MB per month.
