Appeal on behalf of a 240
If I may ask fellow "other" model enthusiasts a favour, please?!
I've just acquired a 240 and am in need of a dog guard. It's an old one without rear headrests so generics (designed to be fixed to such) won't work and genuines are hen's teeth territory. I've got hold of some V70 anchor brackets (see pic) thinking I can use a "modern" fold-up type that rests against the top of the rear seat when in the down position and fits in the "keyhole" slots at the top (I still have the Volvo star key tool from my old V70). Could someone measure the distance between said mounting holes and advise back, please? The 240 would be approx 41" (1041.5mm) between so I'm trying to find a suitable modern candidate that would fit (V50/60/70 etc). Many thanks...

This photo shows a genuine Volvo V70 dog guard mounting.
Are you asking for the measurement between the black bit of metal (with the red and green dots on it) and the same bit on the other side of the car?

The idea is to find a modern (and therefore readily available) Volvo dog guard to fit those keyhole slots as though it was in the "correct" vehicle. The bits I've fitted happen to be from a phase 3 V70 and, having had one- and 2 phase twos, I recall the way the guard fits is the same but the pitch between the mountings varies with the model. V70s will be wider than V60s and they are wider than V50s and I suspect V70s widened with each phase etc. With those brackets fitted to my 240 as in the pic, the width between is 41" so an actual later V70 guard would appear to be too wide according to a previous response, hence my appeal across the model forums to find another later Volvo estate with the same width between those holes in the car- hope that makes sense. I can shim to vary the width (inwards) to a degree but can't go much wider than 41.5" (by using thinner spacer washers at the bolts. I'd also remove the plastic cover if I found a viable guard.

probably the most accurate way to measure this if you dont have the guard is, pull out the netting from the back seats, extend metal rod to fit it into the fixings, remove again and measure that length
if no-one else gets round to that before me I'll do it for you in the next day or two (for my model anyway) |

My phase 2 V70 measures 1090mm, so unfortunately looks like it will be too wide for your 240.

Not chewy but two Golden Retrievers so significant forward mass momentum potential! I suspect a narrower other Volvo's original guard will be near enough for a bit of adjustment (V40 or 50 perhaps- appeals on appropriate sub forums). Another alternative I considered is to use B&Q steel angle or tube to mount aftermarket ones.... Thanks for doing the honours with the tape measure.

What about trying a breakers for the expanding netting pole from a V70?

I still have the cargo divider twist lock poles from my old V70(3) (which are a bit floppy)- and the net, but do you mean the telescopic steel one from the two-part retractable nets that slot into cassettes on the seat back? That's a good call but I'd have no lower anchor points for that scheme, hence the original idea of the hinged rigid gate as these hang from the top and rest against the top of the seat back. Food for thought though, and thanks for the tip. Best, Dave
