Tyre help
Guys,
Puncture going to work today. Put the spare on and just been to a tyre spot who said because it has VOL on the tyre wall it is special order? It's a Pirelli p zero 245 45 R18 100w....which I can get for £113, but he says that's not the same as it doesn't have VOL on.... And thry are £160. Can you advise please as I need it sorted today. Thanks |

I had same question from the tyre fitter when I had replacements fitted a few weeks ago at Costco where I had pre-ordered Michelin Cross Climates for fitting.
AFAIK, unlike BMW etc, there is nothing specific about tyres for Volvos and my guess is the VOL is there as they would have been supplied to Volvo by Pirelli at manufacture. Checked warranty and could see no mention of non-VOL tyres invalidating anything. So, needless to say, went ahead and surprisingly enough, the tyres have not fallen off yet...

I had VOL marked Pirelli’s from Kwik Fit last year, had to order them in from the warehouse, they are Volvo approved tyres, they arent just factory fits, they retail them just like the MO ones for Mercedes (which I found didn’t really cost any more than non MO).
I have tyres included on the lease and they insisted I wait for the VOL tyres rather than the regular Pirelli the branch stocked. https://www.camskill.co.uk/m61b0s112..._Noise%3A_70dB £90...

Just spoke to a reputable indy local tyre center. They said Volvo will say its the compound, but they said when they have asked for technical data they cannot/ won't provide it. She said absolutely no difference, so I'm getting standard Pirelli fitted today. Not VOL but 40 quid cheaper. I'm absolutely livid as it's a new tyre that's non repairable 😥

I seem to recall that the VOL marked tyres have the PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System) incorporated whereas standard Pirelli's don't.
Like you, I lost a nearly new tyre to a pothole when my V90 was a couple of months old and could only get a non-VOL Pirelli at the time (mine are 20" so rarer anyway), this replacement didn't have the PNCS foam insert but to be honest I never noticed any difference! When I needed to replace the front tyres some time later due to wear, VOL marked PNCS tyres had dropped dramatically in price, were readily available so I reverted to the OE spec tyres.

The marking is really just for initial production tyres. The same tyre would be provided to other manufacturers but with their mark (MO) for example. This has been confirmed in writing by companies like Conti for example.
As long as the tyre is correct size, speed and weight rating you can fit any brand of tyre you choose. So a like for like Pirelli tyre (just not stamped VOL) is not going to be a problem. I think the fact that they are available is more about those who choose to stay 'OEM' for all things to do with their cars rather than any tech consideration.
