GDI smoking like a mother....
Right so I found the "unknown mechanical fault" on my new V40 GDI.
When it starts to get warm it smokes like a mother from the exhaust. It looks white and according to my dad has a faint smell of oil and not steam (I don't have a good sense of smell so cant tell) When on idle it smokes, when driving it plumes from the exhaust and revving it up increases the smoking. Idles fine, drives fine (as fine as a 1.8 non turbo drives), no engine lights. What's the problem? |

You don`t say how many miles?........but i should start to check all the emission system pipes & hoses etc.....
Don`t forget the brake servo hose as well as this is a service item and only on the GDI!.........super motors but just need there servicing done proper...

Find out if it's using oil and how much.
I had a cavalier that smoked like bloody ell, did the valve seals first and it turned out to be the piston rings. It used 5L ish of oil in around 100mile.

Compression check job of both cylinders and cooling system to figure it out correctly, assuming it's not a blocked CCV, although they don't normally cause a lot of smoke unless the rings etc are kaput.
Worn valve guide oils seals cause more smoke when first started, so this is probably something else.

Just looked up the service interval for the crankcase ventilation and it should be every 20k Vacuum hose from the servo and connection nipple on head 40k Over pressure in the sump will cause excessive oil consumption / smoke! Although not a diesel it has an EGR valve which should be cleaned.....

No harm doing so. 960kg made some very good points. Check the crankcase ventilationin case it's blocked. The EGR is 99.99% rock solid blocked, as I have never ever seen one not blocked. If neither, then sounds like piston rings.
