Odd that there isn't a clear cut answer to what the difference is between a D and a D5. .

Not sure which info is incorrect, but if you have better information, fair enough. I would clarify that the parkers applies to the whole of the Mk 1 XC90, while Dexter specifically asked about a 2004.

This may be of interest to you. Not an official source, just other musings of someone from the internet, but it corroborates some of the Parkers information that not "all mark1 diesel XC90's in the UK are D5's"

"163bhp or 185bhp
The 163bhp will be all pre-May 2005 cars and detuned later cars (badged 2.4D)."

https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/p...ex.htm?t=64474

For Dexter22, the info in the Honest John link, may be useful to you as it appears to discuss a little about the engine characteristics, assuming Truckbus doesn't disagree with the information.
Assuming the info in that post is correct, the original question identified a 2004 car, which as Truckbus states should all be the same D5's, with the same power output and may be a typo in the advert description.

Power output.

A 2.4D is still a 5 cylinder diesel, but it has less power than the ones with the “D5” badge. It was Volvo’s way, at the time, of defining the lowest bhp variant in models of vehicles. The V70 & S80 for example had 2.4D models.

I haven’t seen a 2.4D XC90 though, so I don’t think the above regarding the power output applies. It could be just mistakes in adverts. Every XC90 of the era you’re looking at that’s a diesel (obviously) had a “D5” badge on the back, not “2.4D” like other models did.

As mentioned in another post, do your research properly before buying one of these. There’s a big difference between a Toyota & a prestige SUV… Two different vehicles, two different brands, different price ranges, parts prices etc. I’m not a fan of buying vehicles without looking at them, but each to their own. I wouldn’t do that with any car to be honest, even if it was a brand spanking new Rolls Royce. That’s how you get stung, but you’ve been lucky I guess.

thanks
Ignoring petrol versions, which are not very common, all Mk 1 XC90's in the UK from inception in 2003 until end in 2014 where badged as D5's with the one exception of a short cutover period from June to September in 2005 with 2006MY cars where manual models with the newer 185 BHP Euro 4 engine were badged D5 and Automatic (Geartronic) versions still had the older 163 BHP Euro 3 engine and were badged 2.4D. When the updated engine came to the cars with automatic gearboxes - they were badged D5 again.

Unlike some other Volvo models - only Volvo 5 cylinder diesel engine were fitted, there is no 2.0D version with a Ford lawn mower engine in.

So to answer your question in a different way - the 2.4D is a Euro 3 automatic car which is exactly the same as a D5 that was being sold a few months earlier. A few months later - the automatic cars had a D5 badge again but with the newer 185 BHP Euro 4 version and a 6 speed automatic.

An excellent summary, and to check which engine is fitted to any potential car you're looking at, the 163 bHp Euro 3 have black engine covers and don't have a Diesel Particle Filter (DPF) fitted, the 185bHp Euro4 engines have a silver grey engine cover and are fitted with DPFs.

There are other Volvo models, such as the P3 V70, where the more powerful 5 cylinder oil burners were called D5 and the least powerful variant the 2.4D.

But not on the XC90, where they were all badged as D5. The V5 log book will stated "D5" on the 163, "D5 185" or "D5 200", but the badge on the boot is always D5, barring the changeover year to the 185 where some 163s were badged as 2.4D...but there are very, very few. There were none badged as 2.4D in other years.

It orignally did mean diesel, 5 cylinder - Volvos own launch literature said as much. Of course this went out the window about 10 years ago when D4 and D3 were used to designate the small bore, lower output diesels (still excellent units, BTW).

But as far as the MK1 XC90s goes its easy - if its 5 cyclinder and rattles a bit on start up then its a D5, and regardless of the boot badge will stste D5,on the V5.

I am curious as to how many XC90 163 V5's you've seen to make this claim ?

Familyman90 is absolutely correct.

No need to see V5's he simply knows what he's talking about.
