Retro fit Passenger airbag disable switch??
Simple question as the title asks. Can it be done? Has it been done? My research suggests the control switch is a simple on/off switch, so nothing complicated. In other Volvo's they have standardized wiring to accommodate options ie electric seat operation, towing electrics, and my AWD V70R has more electrical wires ending in factory tied up chocolate block connectors than I can shake a stick at.
I asked the local dealer, and they said no....but knowing the ingenuity here, no is not the same as impossible. 2009 V50 SE 1.8 Man. Petrol Cheers Bob |

I think it is just a simple switch, but don't know what it controls - may be a control signal that a bit of software interprets - in which case not so simple. If you experiment, make sure you disconnect the battery before undoing any wires. Check if there is an 'accessory' that can be fitted then get the dealer to do it. At a cost of course ..

According to a wiring diagram for the SRS module, there are only 3 wires which come from the switch and run directly to the SRS, no junctions,no earths, nothing. I have the positions the wires leave the SRS module,(B8 : B12 :B27) so if I look at the module and there are wires ...Robert's the name of your fathers brother....
I was hoping/wondering if anyone had carried out/tried to do the procedure of fitting the switch so I knew if it were possible, or running up a blind alley. Cheers Bob PS Good shout about the battery disconnect |

Modifying the SRS system is high-risk territory... most of the wiring is monitored so the system can log faults if there any short circuits or disconnections, hence I would expect the switch to present two different values of resistance rather than on/off.
As has been said - disconnect the battery AND leave the key in Pos II on the ignition - so when the airbag system is first energised when you re-connect the battery you are not sat behind the steering wheel.....

Thanks Tannaton, I'm not doing anything with the pass airbag switch until I get confirmation its possible. I don't want to mess up a working car.
That said, there's something within me that just rails against being told "that can't be done". when I think it might be possible. It might be possible, we just have not yet figured out how to do it. ( reprogramming a haldex DEM immediately springs to my mind) The attached wiring diagram appears straight forward, ( 3/157 PACOS) but my electrical skills begin with changing a bulb and end with wiring a 13A plug, I'm much happier spinning my spanners. I'm waiting for a "Lukas" or similar to say "yes it can be done" or "no it can't because...." for a reason I totally understand. Cheers Bob |
