someone mentioned that i dont need the other shim. i could get away with just the one.use some rolled up cardboard in both the shafts to hold the cogs in place.until i get the driveshafts in.as once the gearbox is in place and bolted up,then there would be no movement from the cogs until the shafts go in,as long as i am careful taking the cardboard out...what does anyone think to that

ok, so people do try to help out but some are jack the lad and say , Nah ,you don`t have to do that mate ,just do this and then that, it is ok for them but i doubt they would do it to there own motor!

If you look at that shim it is quite thick and not just a piddly 4 thou and it keeps that particular cog in close mesh with the gear next to it, also shims take the wear instead of the metal is is up against on the other side of it.

if you succeded in getting the assembly all together you may well find that you will have a terrible whine on the final drive as the play has not been taken up and the cog will wear partly out of mesh to where it should be.

So in the end it is over to you, you decide, but i think in reality you would be sorry!!

Just bide your time , you will be a more satisfied bunny having the gearbox as Volvo intended.

if you had ever seen a Volvo mechanic with cardboard in the gearbox drive shaft holes you would be astounded!

In Greece they would use an imaginary part and charge you for it triple the price of the UK price plus the labour. Many dodgy mechanics out there including the ones working at dealerships too....

Well they've got to find some way of paying back the Germans and the French.

Problem is that the money does not go to the Germans or the french. It goes to the fat bellies of the dealers and no one else. Every single original part in greece is double or triple the price of the UK. a thermostat in Israel was £80 when I could get it here for £15 from Rufe. It just does not make sense
