it is very similar to a wheel stud if you measure the diameter of the splined but should find a wheel stud the same size

I think (only think though!) this will do the job Mark :

If memory serves the nuts need an 18mm socket so are almost certainly M12 thread, not sure on the pitch and the actual splines are in question but gives you a starting point at least.

What's wrong with the one on the cap you've removed/need to repair?

Same thing I was thinking Laird, at worst a cap head high tensile bolt would be fine, iirc there isn't really much room for a proper bolt and washer or flange bolt

It they are anything like 2 of the cars I've robbed bits off the ends of them and the nut is blob of crusty rust.

They nut is a squashed lock nut, so at least a decent nyloc should go back on, it's also the same size. Ut as the rear top spring retainer if that helps ID it's size

One sheared off Dave as they were so rusty. I heated it up and tapped out what was left.

I bet the air turned a delicate shade of blue in west Scotland when that happened Mark!

Something i forgot to mention, the stud i linked to is 52mm long, i think that's about the right length but would be a good idea to check. As Jebus said, if push came to shove you could use a high tensile cap screw or similar. Could be a faff getting in there with an Allen key or similar to hold the bolt while the nuts are done up though

I'm used to it on Ole Rusty Dave. The rule of thumb is for every three bolts you get undone one shears off !!

I can confirm that is pretty accurate. They get corroded by the aluminium in the suspension arms they attach to. I was hoping Volvo would have new ones (complete), are they NLA?
