I don't think you are going to have to open the the cluster as this is a separate, self contained unit that screws onto the cluster after a blanking plate is removed.
No need to open up anything, just remove plate, fit temp display, fit screws to hold in place, fit cluster back into the dash, connect wires.

Well said Des !! However, Volvo has to be the most well thought out; to work cars on the market;; This makes me think of a story of a reporter talking to a Astronaut about to climb on to a space craft and ask,,, hows it feel to be in control of the most expensive piece of machinery ever made ?? Astonaut replies,, How would you feel, being in charge of the most expensive machine in the world made up of thousands of parts, ALL MADE AND SUPPLIED BY THE LOWEST TENDERER ??

This comment was born after the disaster of the Challenger, when a $1.50 0ring blew , when a $3.00 one should of been used, or so story goes !!!

Point is ALL cars machinery are made basicly by the "Lowest Tenderer" even Volvo !! As i found out with the 960 speedos that used a a couple of 50p capacitors when speedo wouldnt have failed if a 1.80p one had been used !! , The designers must pull their hair out with the "Bean Counters" changeing things to save that few cents,, Maybe the designers made that bulb easy to get at ,,BUT it cost an extra quid to do, so they did it way it is,,, But just think,, every bridge , every building, every road,, Has in most cases been made by the lowest tenderer,,
as i said ,IMO Volvo are one of the best for the price we pay for them !!

That's great news, I never knew that, thanks. I want to replace the main dash bulbs with LEDs.

Cheers,
Sasha

All of the warning bulbs are easily reached with the cluster out.
If memory serves, the main dial lights are also easy to get to without need for opening the cluster too...
So shouldn't be too difficult a job to swap over to LED's for you...

Hi,

You may well be able to reach it, but whether it is easy to change without contortion, I can't remember off hand.

The temp reading on mine displays the figures but the little screen is in perpetual darkness, day or night, although the orange frost light will glow if it's freezing outside. To be able to read the display I have to get the passenger to shine a light on it. Does this mean that my frost bulb works but the display is meant to be in darkness? Not a big deal, I know, but out of curiosity...
