I worked as a tanker driver s few years ago used to tanker up at the depot near poynton in cheshire from there i delivered the fuel to various outlets including the local tesco they received exactly the same fuel as the rest whether things have changed i dont honestly know
Based on the above ive always treated stories of supermarket fuel being inferior as a urban myth however im always happy to be proved wrong Last edited by dunnyd5; Jan 13th, 2015 at 20:17. |

Filled up at Tesco at £1.13 and then got to work and found it was £1.10 at Asda. Never mind .

Based on what I've read, I'm going to do an experiment. I've had my 136bhp D3 V70 since May '13 and have done 53,500 miles. I have only ever put in diesel from Tesco; it's convenient for where I live, cheap, I have a Tesco credit card so collect lots of points. I've recorded every fill up since new and avg mpg to date is 48.5. Nothing has passed that car's lips but Tesco diesel!
Tonight, despite Tesco selling theirs at 113p/l I have filled up with Shell V-Power at 122p/l and will do the same for the next 3 tanks and will keep you posted.

A bit of an update as follows:
The trip computer has always displayed somewhere around the 50mpg mark. Yesterday, it displayed 49.2mpg when I reset it at the Shell pumps. I've done 233 miles today of similar driving to normal: a bit of traffic in Exeter, the M5 and some A and B roads in Gloucestershire and the trip tells me 51.2mpg. I know this is very early and I will do the 3 tanks, but at the mileage I do, the fact I don't pay for servicing and I only have the car for another 14 months ( longevity and repairs bills don't bother me) and the way I claim for mileage at 13p/mile (variable) regardless of how much I pay at the pumps, but if I'm only getting 4% improvement for 8% more, it would say I'll be chucking Tesco stuff in it the week after next! Oh, and the Tesco Clubcard points for my Christmas shopping... All said, it definitely feels more responsive, even though I drive like an old fart

I'm onto my second fill of Shell V-Power and there's sod all difference in fuel consumption. In 655 miles I've used 63.53l which is pretty much the same +/- a few miles.
However, 2 things: seeing as fuel is so cheap, I am going to stick to my original plan of monitoring this over 3 full tanks AND I have to say that the majority of my driving is sitting at the same speed over many miles on the motorway. Just keeping one eye on the instantaneous MPG, I can most definitely see that the figures are higher in town, on inclines and on A and B roads. Only about 10% of my driving is the latter. As such, I would imagine that if more of my driving was that, I would see a difference. I should perhaps do these records on my XC70 which hardly ever goes on the motorway, but a tank lasts me 6 weeks, so would take 3.5 months to do! As before, the response is noticeably different. The last 3 tanks on Tesco were 44.48, 45.07 and 46.86mpg and the tank of Shell gave 46.22mpg. NB: The data is from a spreadsheet of brim-to-brim fill ups rather than from the trip computer which leads me to believe a good 5mpg better

Interesting findings. My last tank was Tesco and the economy seemed down, I have put Shell Regular Diesel in this time.
I would propose doing a similar test but as I start Jury Service next week, the car will effectively be going into hibernation for a fortnight! |

All this talk of Tesco diesel being poor quality is complete rubbish, Their Dotcom home delivery service vans use Tesco diesel if the store has pumps, The 2 years i have worked there we have not had 1 van off the road with fuel related issues and we were getting up to 23MPG out of the 3.5 tonne Ivecos before we got Mercs. I also use momentum in my remapped 855 T5 and i notice no difference whatsoever using that and on the few occasions i have wasted my money putting V power in, I actually get slightly better MPG with momentum.

My tdi would not agree with you on that one. It will run tesco crap fine but performance is compromised.

Never had the slightest problem with my S60 D5185 running exclusively on cheap supermarket fuel over the last 55k miles
I am not even remotely convinced that there is any difference other than price.
