Default Engine System Service Required - oil related?

On a long drive back to the UK from southern France this week in my 2006 D5 XC90, I had the "Low Oil Warning" message come up and a yellow triangle. Not wanting to risk a seized engine halfway across France, I stopped at the next aire and put a litre of 0w30w in. The dipstick showed about two thirds up the xxx marker and the message went away.

Following day, on the M40 about half an hour from home, going uphill, the "Engine System Service Required" message came up with the yellow triangle and the auto gearbox would not seem to change down to allow me to accelerate. Freaked out, I slowed to 60mph for the rest of the journey and got home OK, but the message is still there.

Reading other posts, it seems the two events might be related, with the second issue being caused by too much oil, even though it's not at the top marker of the dipstick. Any ideas why the first message might have appeared (I'd already driven over 1,000 miles in two days) and what I should do next?

Cheers,
Neil

Yep, plausible that 1L may have been too much, hence your error. Swirl arm still connected?
