Default Door edge protectors

Has anyone got a subtle and functional solution for this they can share? I noticed when getting my son out of the car that the back doors (esp. the near side rear) has a few paint chips already from the door being opened onto an iron fence (had the car for 2 months!) Not me of course!

I've looked around and not found anything that great that would fit the upper part of the door.

Don't want anything like those huge black things with indicator size reflectors my dad insisted on using during the 80/90's on the XR2 and Carlsson's he used to drive. Looked ridiculous!

Default Door Edge Protectors.

From my local motor factors a while ago. "Universal" brand "GUARD A DOOR". Two strips on a card. Each 30cms. long, cost 0.99 pence per card. Are alkathene and slip on to the door edge. Card shows part numbers GD41/12 Clear, GD42/12 Black and GD43/12 Red. You may have to visit one or two factors to find them.

Halfords do a clear door edge protector on a roll, complete with double sided tape. Half a roll is enough to do my xc70 doors but I don't stick it on as it turns opaque with exposure to the elements over time, when it does I change it and buy another roll.
I do from the top of the door to the top of the plastic armouring that the xc carries, does not look out of place and offers protection to the whole door edge, I cut it with a side cutters but a scissors would also do the job.
