I thought that every aspect of the EGR became covered in oily grunge sooner or later!

Boost leak, failed seals in egr motor. Remove, clean it. Replace it and monitor.

Just for info, if anyone has this issue, the car was at Volvo for a service today - they advised that misting of this type is not an issue.

Strange - I wouldn't accept an oily mist on the outer of the engine.
I do treat under the bonnet to a de-grease and pressure wash from time to time. Helps spot issues like you had.

Did you clean it up with carb/brake cleaner before it went to Volvo?
