Default Low Idol and Lots of Smoke (B200E)

Well first off I thought one of my engine mounts had gone because the engine shakes at idol when cold. Checked the mounts luckily they're fine.
Then I realised after ten minutes of running the idol is at 700 when I get it up to 900rpm it's fine. However the amount of smoke coming out the back is quite concerning.
I suspect the internals are going, it's done nearly 400,000km so no surprises there.
Any thoughts on what's causing a low idol and lots of smoke.

Is it black smoke? Did the fault has come on quite suddenly? Is it using alot of fuel?

If yes to the above, it could be a faulty temp sensor for the ECU. I had that fault on my 760. When that sensor fails, the ECU thinks it's minus 60 or whatever and dumps in loads of extra fuel - hence the smoke and poor running.

The B2xx are well renowned for long miles 400km is not a huge problem unless the engine has been abused with lack of oil changes, which will usually cause the pump to fail first.

Black smoke = over fuel - injection system (assuming you mean B200E 360, not 700).

Blue smoke = oil buring, valve seals or piston rings .. vary rare.

If its rocking alot it could be a bad misfire, check for any. Also the headgasket can leak on cyl 4 and when cold the moisture causes abit of a miss untill it clears.

If the smoke is white its almost definetly this, I have seen a few b200s including my own and some at low mileages, with badly corroded HGs on cyl 4

Sorry for the slow reply, it would appear I have a tempremental car.
Started it up again yesterday (haven't in ages) and there was barely any smoke this time (it's white) so moisture in the exhaust system probably doesn't help that it's winter so rains pretty much everyday and my car's pointing downhill.
It was idoling at 700 so I changed it to between 900 and 950 which eliminated most of the knocking and when it warms up there's practically none. However there's still some knocking so I'll get a new gasket set (cheers evoman) hopefully that will sort it out. If that doesn't I've got to find a misssfire somewhere. Both of which are hopefully the explanation to where my fuels going.
So all in all things are looking good, wonder how long that will last before it craps out again.
Also I need to slip the clutch until it's warmed up so I need a new clutch but the only ones I can find are in th UK and it costs around £86 to post to NZ so nearly $200 just on postage plus £60 for the clutch itself.

A thought, if it was a leaking head gasket then when water went into the cylinder wouldn't it cause the pressure to drop causing the engine to overheat? My engine has never overheated and still dosn't so I'm guessing it's a missfire. Also I bought an AF meter because mines sticky at 1500rpm so got it it came from a 360 but the part number is 0280 202 035 and it has 4 pins (the same as my B230ET AF meter) but the one on there atm is 0280 202 034 and has 5 pins. The 4 pin AF meter let the engine start but it didn't keep going so not sure what it actually came from.

It only weeps, mine got so bad I could see it running down the block though. Have you been topping up your coolant at all?

Id look for the missfire before changing your HG. Id change, leads, plugs, dizzy and rotor arm. Might as well and wont cost alot. If its doesnt sure it atleast it should run better generally.

You havnt said yet though what colour the smoke is that seems to assocaited with this knocking?
