1989 240GL auto (B200E) rough idleing

When starting the engine(89000 miles)struggles into life (although that has improved since replacing the petrol filter)and when it idles it runs rough with the engine givin random shudders. I have checked the timing and for air leaks around the CIS injection system, (the rubber gaiters,hoses etc). Top end performance is good and it has never conked out yet!

Does it do it only when cold? Perhaps faulty temperature sensor?

changed spark plugs etc. and when starting now engine run about at 1200 revs then settles down to around 750 revs then as engine warms up ends up at 950- 1000 revs with it running a lot smoother than before so I am going to Quit on this one whilst I'm winning
