A 440 originaly from south wales , which dealers has it been through in the service book? Looks familiar! The diesel should go pretty well and once when i took one of the same year from bristol to Swansea not exceeding 60 mph got 77 mpg ....

Hi Again
If you are an engineer you should be able to change the cambelt yourself.Haynes dont do a manual for that car so i used a combination of the Haynes petrol car manual and also their Automotive Diesel Engine Guide (3286)
ISBN 1 85960 286 X

the cambelt is easy -it is the prep work which was a bit of a 'mare. My crankshaft pulley was 'fairly' tight and my neighbour was giggling when he saw me with a socket,T bar + jacking handle + 4 feet of exhaust pipe to crack the bolt,we werent sure if the bolt or the socket was going to break first LOL but it worked ok
You may need to take a panel off under the flywheel to lock the ring gear for pulley removal.
You are supposed to use a special tool to tension the belt, perhaps you might know a friendly volvo man - i just had to estimate the tension on mine-not ideal LOL.
Depending on your usual journey length anything over 45mpg is a bonus, best I ever got was 56 mpg touring up in the outer hebrides, but normally 48-50 mpg

The clutch set should be fairly straight forward to get. EBay has them for £60 or even your local auto store should be able to order one as as there basically a renault part.

The fuel filter I found is very basic, though a bit awkward to change compared to the pug and Citroen td's. I did find that the fuel filter hand pump was very weak on mine, so I cut the fuel pipe near the driver side top mount and inserted a squeeze bulb or grenade which works far better for fuel bleeding when changing the fuel filter!

Also the fuel filter housing can draw in air if not tighened (well did on mine), which led me to believe why these engines have a tentancy for cutting out going up a hill when fuel was low in the tank!

yes it is . has it got any entries in the service book in red ?

The standard clutch will do fine with towing , they have never been a problem ..

The standard clutch for the diesel is already uprated ... I wouldnt worry , if it is working ok it will for a long long time , volvo clutches generaly dont wear out unless they are abused .

Being serviced at those outlets you mentioned means it has been well looked after :-)
