As far as I can remember (and I'm thinking back many years - god I feel old at the moment) it was an EU law that made Cats a required peice of equipment in '92. I also seem to recall reading that the decision upset Ford who had developed their lean burn engines that put out less emisions, and more power than a normal engine with a act, and had to start again as the lean burn engines were not compatible with cats.
Of course I'm thinking back 12 years and so could be wrong :) Stu |

Hi Stu, that's my impression as well as I used to have a '91 440 and was told by my local garage that it was not compulsory for it to have a cat if the cat failed (it never failed!) as the law only required post-91 cars to have cats (see my other replies for the exact(ish)year and date of compulsory cats(hows that for an oxymoron ;-)).Thanks for your reply!
