My dad had a Clubman when I was a kid and I recall one trip back from Kent to Watford when the fan belt went in the middle of London. mum had to sacrifice one of her stockings, not sure it had the same romantic overtones when there was a car load of grumpy kids.
You repair sounded a little more involved but I suspect a fan belt on a modern car could be bodged with a stocking.

I would not like to try it. Most fan belts these days are poly vee belts and rather thin in profile and drive things with both sides, unlike the single vee belts of old that would accomodate a hank of stocking.

Myself I always carried a spare set of points, rotor arm, condenser and fan belt in the boot. None of my girlfriends would of sacrificed a stocking for my car, their view was my dads car doesn't break down, why should yours.

New verses old, ladies legs in stockings are still much better looking than in tights. Plus, have you seen what tights do to burglars faces?

Old wins again...
