Ambient Temperature gauge - Wiring
Hola,
Bought an amb.temp.gauge from Geoge H some 1.5yrs ago and it got stuck in the garage and I thought I'd do something about fitting it last w-end. The Gauge is a proper 940 Volvo made 1990, it does fit the dash (bottom left) but wiring connectors are different as mine is a 1997 car so can anyone come up with any suggestions as how to wiore it up ? From the unit I have 2 greens for the sensor and 4 other wires: orange - brown/black - yellow/white - black. I have played with it a bit and can get the bulb in the unit to light up if I hook up black to +(pos) and orange to - (neg) only problem is that I get no reading on the display - any ideas ???. From memory 2 wires were for the 'dimming function' and the others for power. I have tried various permittations and am stuck. Wires to sensor appears to be OK, maybe the unit is faulty....

I'm at work at the moment so can't check, but the general wiring convention is that black is earth. The bulb will illuminate if you get the connections back to front, but few electronic components will operate that way. I wouldn't discard the gauge just yet

Send me your e-mail address so that I can attach the wiring diagram for the Outside Air Temperature gauge. The club only allows about 350k attachments and this is about 700k. Use my address as on page 40 of the "Driver".
All the best, Peter. |

Hello Selkirk, Cockburnspath calling.
"From the unit I have 2 greens for the sensor and 4 other wires: orange - brown/black - yellow/white - black." For what it is worth, here is my penny-worth. The two green cables run to the sensor unit. Orange runs to the fuse (?8) Black runs to earth Yellow/white runs to the rheostat for the instrument lights Brown/black runs to earth (These last two may be reversed - I do not have a wiring diagram for this). My wiring diagram for the V90 shows a brown/black running to the rheostat and a blue running to earth (the others are the same). I hope this is a bit of a help rather than a confusion.

The 940 is a little different in it's wiring Ian. I have done a copy of it for him from my 1996 940 wiring book and am waiting for his e-mail addy to send it to him. Club is limited as to size of attachments which, as my copy is about twice the limit means it has to be sent direct.
Thanks for your ever helpfulness Ian and all the best, Peter. |

Peter,
Many thanks for the drawings. It only took 5 min's to go over it and I then had the thing up an running showing the temp. Great stuff, all I have to do now is fitting it, should not be any major problems (I hope...) Again many thanks to you all.
