You may be in luck, as I still have my broken mechanism to hand... let's have a look...

It looks like the two ends of the cable meet inside the thing (runner) that the window mounts onto, that runs up and down the channel. Each end of the cable has a metal plug on the end that will connect into the plastic parts of the runner.

Looking at my mechanism, it seems that the plastic parts of the runner have failed, leaving the cable nothing to mount into. I remember finding a bit of the plastic in the bottom of my door. If you've been equally unlucky then I suspect fixing the mechanism may be nearly impossible. There are usually a few going on ebay for reasonable prices or I got a few quotes through partsgateway.com, the cheapest being about £40.

After having a good look at the mechanism, I don't see how you can remove the runner without breaking it or some other part of the mechanism. I think you'll find that most people just replace it with a good one from a scrap car.

Hope that's of some use.

cheers, Ed

I thought about using double ended universal gear cable /brake cable for a bicycle but when i looked at the mechanism closely it would be difficult to make it work (though not impossible) best way is to get a complete replacement from the scrap yard/breakers. A new one from volvo is £220 +vat -they dont sell the cable separately.

got one today in a scrapyard 5 minutes work and it only cost £10 along with some other odd bits and pieces.
got one yesterday for £15 in another scrapyard.
(2 480s 1 my sons the other my daughters)

really pays to phone around , you can usually get a list of phone numbers from the free motor weekly magazines at petrol stations.

I buy my replacements from Norfolk Volvo In Swaffham, cost approx £100 but
they are a better design than the original, the cable pulling towards the stronger fittings, I've owned 5, 480/s including my present one which I/ve had for 6years, I/ve replaced several winders but never had this new type break, buying second hand you will almost certainly have to replace it again.
Cheers.
