Default Remote Start Functionality

The remote start functionality is very useful on these cold mornings. However I find it frustrating that it won’t operate if the fuel level is low.
Ideally it could just warn you and then offer you the options to continue, reduce the time running or not proceed with remote starting.
The user surely knows if they are within easy range of a fuel station.

How low does it have to be? Less than 20 litres and I get twitchy.

I've started mine with 60 miles of range before (remote start). Not sure how much lower I would want to take it tbh.

If you intend on using the remote start, why not fill her up the night before if its too low?

That's very simple to fix.
Adopt a policy of never letting your fuel drop below 50%

I drove a Ford S-Max for a while (I have happy memories of chopping that in for a V70) and that would give you a fuel consumption in gallons per hour when stationary -- it said I think 0.2 gallons per hour. A bit of googling suggests that not unreasonable for a 2 litre engine (the S-Max was diesel).

So if you got 30mpg out of the car, every hour that it runs at idle will lose you 6 miles of range. Given that at most you can remote start twice for 15 minutes before you have to get in and start it, you'd lose 3 miles of range in that time. I'd say they're probably being a bit over-cautious. I know it's frustrated me once or twice when I know I'll be going via a petrol station.

That’s not going to be good for your fuel economy though

The problem I have is that we fuel up free at work first thing in a morning before going off for up to several days. The depot is only 3 miles away but is closed after 5pm.
I guess in the scale of things it’s really nice to have functionality and vitally important.

At least the Volvo is reliable unlike my colleagues Discovery Sport.

Isn't it illegal to leave a vehicles engine running and unattended?

It was when I last read a highway code, albeit that was some years ago.

Yes, it is on public roads but okay on a private drive.

Whether it's okay to pollute in this way or annoy your neighbours is another matter.
