Ok, so normal fuel consumption when stationary is 0.2 gph (gallons per hour). If it's higher than that when the engine is warm then it's either running a regen of has a load on it i.e heated windscreens, seats etc.

Watching the stop/start icon seems a better way to monitor a regen.

Pete.
Agreed but we run both our cars with start dtop deactivated so the instant fuel consumption readout is the next best option. Incidentally, my BMW has never had dpf issues and it's over 5 years old.

It really isn’t something the driver needs to know. If the engine is switched off during a partial regen, it will restart and run normally when needed and until the pressure difference again tells it to regenerate. The point at which it restarts depends on how thoroughly or not it had completed when shut down.
The process is completely automatic with only some mechanical failure or persistently unsuitable driving conditions likely to cause a complete failure and blockage. Ever since DPF systems have been fitted to cars, starting about fifteen years ago, it has been inadvisable for people who mainly drive in town or for short journeys or people who only dither around to run diesel cars.

Some designs are much worse than others for having DPF issues. If you had a pre-facelift Ingenium engine transverse mounted in a Jaguar Land or Range Rover you would be very likely to have issues unless you ran it well loaded/hard for long trips regularly. There is no cure for them, so avoid like the plague. The in-line and post facelift [with pivi-pro] applications are perfectly fine.
Basically never buy a vehicle with a DPF remote mounted more than a foot from the turbo or manifold.

Quacker, the interuption of the regeneration in itself may not be a problem. What is concerning posters on this thread is that it can result in excess deisel finding it's way into the sump and how this can be avoided.
