Hi all, I recently obtained a 440 diesel with 100k on the clocks. Going to be using it as my daily commute to work. The car's in very good condition, have already driven about 100 miles. Unfortunately I'm a complete non-mechanic, but when moving off it is quite slow and needs some gas, not sure if this is just normal for a diesel (this is my first ever old diesel I've driven) or if it's the clutch. How much do you think replacing the clutch would be to do at a garage?

The other thing I noticed is the thermostat gauge doesn't work any ideas what this could be?

I have a 440 td with 200k on the clock. They are quite slow untill the turbo kicks in around 2300 revs then its quite nippy. Yours should be the same, if not it could be a number of things. First then would be to give it a service including air and oil filter.

Does it belt out black smoke when accelerating?

Unless your clutch is 'slipping' I wouldnt bother replacing it as this wouldnt effect the sluggish speed you are suggesting.

As for the temperature gauge it could well be the sensor which I think is located in or around the thermostat housing, easly enough to get at, take it out and give it a clean or replace with one up breakers yard.

I think there a great car and there very easy to fix.

Nice mileage! I've not really noticed it pushing out black smoke although it's hard to check due to bad light. I'm getting the car checked out and oil changed today although getting the garage to check out a squeeling sound when revving from a cold start (goes away fairly quickly though)

when you drive from a standstill do you need to step on the gas a bit to get it going?

yea with most of these td it takes a bit to get them going but when there up the revs the drive quite well pulling hard.

The alternator belt squeeking is common especially when cold, it either needs tightened or replaced. An easy job to do and the belts are not expensive at all.

Got it checked out today, also got a few niggly things sorted out and the oil changed. Seems to be in pretty good condition, usual wear and tear for age but no major problems, got the fan belt tightened so hopefully this has sorted the out the squeeling sound and just some play in the track rod end, which I'll sort out soon.

Cheers for letting me know about td's needing a bit of push to get them going, the mechanic also said this about this type of car. I guess moving from my previous small petrol engine to this is quite a bit different.

Anyway ordered some xenon light bulbs and aero wipers from ebay. The current headlights are really rubbish can bearly see with them, a bit dangerous really!
