The D5 is a less powerful diesel engine that doesn't use quite as much fuel. It all comes down to your maths and annual mileage What else do you need to know?

My model year 17 D5 was brilliant. It has software issues in the first six months which were sorted by updates and then it all worked.
The only mechanical issue I had was with the power-pulse pipe bursting. This is just a simple hose from a compressor that fed air to the turbo for great response from idle. It just tended to burst at the swaged joint at the top. I went through two. I believe the latest replacements are sorted. So I wouldn’t hesitate buying a 2017 model car. These and 2018 get away without Addblue which may be a long term advantage, or not. It still meets Euro6 emissions officially, but suspect that it only just scrapes through, hence the later models being fitted with SCR system.

Looking myself at the best buy for an XC90 - currently have an 11 d5 xc90 and looking to change to something newer. Considered a new car but even with the deals could not stomach loosing £25k over three years on one and then paying another £20k to actually buy it.
Seems that 17 onwards offer the best balance - low mileage, the newer electrics with less bugs, mechanical gremlins from first couple of years fixed as well. A momentum pro seems best value with all the toys on from a 17/18 to my mind and nicer seats. Can find some cars just under 3 years old so can get the extended warranty on them to give piece of mind as more complex than older cars. Between £27-33k gives some good value vehicles. |

I’ve just recently (last week) bought a Nov 2018 XC90 T8. I went through a similar evaluation process regarding the ‘right’ age to get the balance between avoiding early model niggles but not paying a huge privilege in depreciation. Every person has their own unique position on this spectrum based on their own circumstances.
For me, I got a late 2018 car so most/all of the early model year niggles should be sorted and I still get almost 12 months Volvo warranty in case there are any issues, but have paid around £30k less than the list price. The problem is that most modern cars are so complicated it’s impossible to avoid all issues, but buying after a few years of the model being on the market at least allows the major niggles to be ironed out. |

Has anyone got a xc90 with air suspension?
How does it compare to the conventional suspension in terms of every day comfort driving. Also any options that are a must with these models? Thanks again |

I love the air suspension - very comfy ride and ease of getting in and out of the vehicle as the suspension lowers. I've not driven a XC90 without air suspension so I cannot comment on the comparison.
