Xc90 05 Fuel pump question (broken down)
Guys,
I have searched the forum, but need to ask a simple question about the in tank fuel pump. I have received a low fuel pressure warning (odb2) and broken down. I started by swapping out the filter, dirty yes, she still won’t start. Now I did try cranking the car over with the fuel filter bowl off, no fuel came through. I assume this is a fuel pump issue, as I would expect the fuel filter bowl to fill when being cranked. Thoughts please before I go buying a replacement pump. Regards MF |

Petrol? Diesel? LPG? Hydrogen? Nuclear waste?
Tell us the engine and fuel type.

The following is assuming you have a Euro 3 D5.
Double check the fuel pump fuse and give the tank some gentle taps to see if it will bring the pump to life. If you have a decent amount of fuel in the tank and a vacuum pump/tester, you can prime the system at the return line in the engine bay then just don't let the fuel level drop too far below a quarter of a tank. I've run my D5 with a dead in tank pump for several months now without issue and I'll get round to fixing or replacing the pump some time next year.

D5 e3 yes
Thanks for the reply, That’s interesting, so the mechanical can pull all the way from the tank provided there’s no air in the line.
I have a general question, can the pump be heard running when the key is turned to position 2, I can’t hear anything at all. Also get no rail reassure staff all. I think I will try priming as suggested, do you have a pic of the return line in question? Thanks for the advice |

Fuse
Just double checking the fuse i have metered is in the engine bay fuse number 9 I think it’s 15a I checked that and that it’s getting power, does the pump have a relay, if it does where is it located?
Cheers MF |

If you have your ear to the bodywork near the filler cap, the pump should be able to be heard when the ignition is first turned on. Kind of like a high pitched buzz/whirr.
The return is the top pipe in front of the engine. You insert the pump into the rubber section and pump until a bubble free stream of diesel comes out then carefully reconnect the rubber hose onto the metal pipe. Priming may take some time as it's a long run back through the engine to the tank via the filter and if the filter isn't fully primed, you could be looking at around 15 minutes until it's ready for a starting attempt. If primed correctly, the engine starts with the first turn of the key.

Update
Thanks for all the responses.
So the reason I broke down. I ran out of diesel.... Basically my fuel sender was stuck at 50% so it looked like I had fuel. When I bashed the bottom of the tank to see if the pump was stuck I heard something drop, looking in the cabin I watched the fuel level fall to zero... Balls Thanks guys. |

You have 2 senders, one for each side of the tank so I guess one read correctly at zero and the other stayed at full hence the half tank reading.
The in tank pump is lubricated by the fuel it pumps so it's likely burned it out if there's no sound from it but you may get lucky and it bursts into life. If so, 5-10 cycles of ignition on for 15 seconds or so then off and repeat could be all that's needed to fire up the engine instead of manual priming.
