RE: Tyres for T5R
Im no tyre expert - are you saying that you can put different widths of tyre onto the same rim? I assumed that this was impossible, but am willing to be persueded otherwise!

RE: Tyres for T5R
Hey Chaps,
This one's been revived eh?? Well - all I can say is that different tyre manufacturers use different tolerences and if you put Bridgestone SO3 215s on the front of my T-5R they take out the arch liners! The main thing I learned from this episode was the the OEM tyres were spec'd for some kinda reason (gearing/handling etc). People are doing different stuff, I'm not gonna try and stop them - but I've been burned before - so Yoko 205/45/17s it is from now on! Regards, Phil :-)

RE: Tyres for T5R
You can indeed put different tyres on, but as Phil just stated they did design the car with the original widths in mind - although not always for the best handling, as you change the tyres lots of things change with it.
The biggest I have done was for my modified Spitty - 185/60 13" instead of 145 or 155 13". Dry grip is to die for }> but it's so very skittish in the wet you can't play that much! Have fun, Stu |

RE: Tyres for T5R
Car came with P-Zero's but they didn't work until
the car was lowered. When they wore out I put Goodyear 215/45-17 F1 on it and it was transformed! That tyre has got to be the best.Stuck to the road like s**t to a blanket - wet or dry! They wore out at 33,000 miles and then I tried some Toyo Proxes T1-S of the same size. They were good but not as good as the F1's and didn't do the miles either. Never had a problem with the body work and the F1's even though I could adjust the ride height at the front (and did!) |

talking about my t5 not a t5r but i put michelin pilots on after 2 sets of p zero.
they are now half worn and still have soooooo much more grip in the wet and dry than the pirellis ever had. |

RE: Tyres for T5R
Contary to my previous comments above on the suitability of Toyo Proxy T1-S tyres on a T-5R, I can now confirm that they rub on the inner arches at the front. Thought it was just down to the tracking being off and causing increased wear on the fronts but no the arch liners have some scars from using full lock.
Am now waiting for the last two tyres I bought in 215/40x17 size to wear down - won't take long fitted to the front!! 205/45x17's will then be fitted all round. There has been alot of chat on the various sizes and manufacturers but can someone give me a definative list of tyres made in the standard size of 205/45x17 (the size the new Mini Cooper S runs on its optional 17" wheels incidently!!). More than the Cooper...
The Honda Civic R also runs 205/45 17" - so far, the ones I have found are:
Kumho Ecstas Pirelli Assimetricos Michelin Pilot Sports Yokahamas And I think that's it - unless of course you know different... We are constanlty coming across someone who says "these tyres are OK for the 850R despite being oversize" and then, like you, finds out that they aren't. Believe me, Volvo would have gone for a size that most manufacturers make if it could, it's just that they wouldn't fit! |

RE: The profile Debate!
Hey Guys,
Avon ZZ3s seem to be an excellent new tyre. Regards, Phil. :-)

RE: Tyres for T5R
Ayup. I am waiting for prices from tirerack.com in the states. I read aBout some Porsche owners in the UK who buy direct from them. The prices (for T5R 17" alloys) seem loads cheaper than anywhere I can find in the UK. I am waiting for a quote from them as I hope that even including freight and import duty, these could still be cheaper. I will keep you posted ...
