I'm still in the market for a fault code reader, it seems amazing to me that so far I havn't seen a single unit for sale second hand (on flea bay), maybe these Autel units are so good nobody wants to part with theirs............

Does anyone have any experience of this?

http://en.bsr.se/products/503450/

A bit more expensive but does it offer additional functionality?

I have spent the last year searching for a code reader for my y2000 S80 B5204T5. I am confused and frustrated. Maybe someone out there can help me. From all I have read do I have it correct?

My understanding of OBD:
OBD were introduced for emissions systems which lit the check engine light also known as the MIL malfunction indicator light.

OBDI appears on American vehicles pre 1996. Manufacturers use their own codes to identify the faults. Registered major discrepancies in emissions system. Protocols SAE J1850 VPW mostly on GM vehicles. SAE J1850 PWM Ford. ? other vehicles.

OBDII introduced in 1996 in America and 2001(petrol) 2004(diesel) introduced to European cars. OBDII has defined codes for all vehicles and is more stringent in the tolerances for failure. It does more and can detect timing etc. Also has more systems in the diagnostics and a quicker computing speed. ISO9141-2 mostly used on European cars 2000 to 2004 ISO14230-4 (KWP2000) us cars 2003+

CAN OBD Introduced in US 2008. New protocols. ISO15765-4 (CAN-BUS)

Anyone got information on the following:
What is DICE (Diagnostic Communication Equipment). Is it anything more than a fancy name for an onboard diagnostic(OBD) tool or is it something specific.
What is VADIS? (is this American)
What is VIDA? (is this American)

I believe DICE is the one for a year 2000 S80 B5204T5 engine(my car) A bit pricey for a DIY compared to those shown on this thread.

What about this reader http://www.diydiagnostics.com/Pro-seriesspecs.htm

All thoughts appreciated

I may well be wrong but it seems the code readers don't seem to work with the 07 MY onwards. Thankfully I managed to return the ebay reader for a refund. Has anyone used an autel on an 07 or later MY?

Email autel via their web site . You need a 3Mb file uploaded to the handheld called volvo_v3.00.zip. Only v1.00 is supplied with a new 701 for some strange reason which covers upto 2005 only

Just spotted this on the bay item number 220712645193. Not sure what version of the volvo zip file is on the update disc. Maybe someone can clarify by asking the seller.

So far, I've used my scanner on a Mercedes S class, a Renault Laguna II, A Mercedes ML350, my BMW 850Ci and obviously my XC90. The autel has communicated with all these vehicles and pulled up all the error codes. Its already paid for itself several times over in diagnostic costs. As an all rounder, I cannot praise this unit enough.
