Default 2.0 auto using excessive fuel

Hi All
i have a 97 2.0i auto that appears to be using an excessive amount of fuel ,around town it has dropped to around 22mpg, it used to be around 28-30 but has recently started to use more,it has done 75k fully serviced new transmission fluid ,but it does seem to hang on to gears not changing into top untill about 3-3500 rpm is this normal? engine temp seems to be around 65-68 degrees oil temp around the same again would this be normal ? it has noticiably dropped during the recent very cold spells ,any help or advice would be greatly appreacited

I have no experience of 40 series auto boxes, but can generalise.
Problems upshifting I have found usually result from incorrect trans fluid levels. Check yours as it has been changed recently. If it's overfull you need to drain some pronto. Follow the handbook for the correct way to check it.
Your engine temperature is too low. It should run at 80-90 degrees. This will be causing overfuelling, assuming 80-90 is what your gauge used to read and it's not a faulty gauge. If your gauge is reliable, change the thermostat. If the temp is still low, change the coolant temp sensor. In that order, cheapest first.
Let us know how you get on

Think i agree it sounds like your thermostats stuck open and the cars not getting warm my old s40 used to run around 82 degrees under normal driving.

I would change thermostat and temp senser at same time as you need to take cover off that holds stat in place to replace sensor so while you do stat you might aswell put a senser in aswell for peace of mind.

I put a new stat and senser in mine last month 108k on clock cos engine warning light came on and said fault with sensor.

Many thanks to you all for replying ,it seems i need a new thermostat then in all fairness this was suggested to me on an earlier posting but i dismissed it because heater was ok ,i dont actually have a guage in mine just got a digital display multifunction thing ,and even on a very hard run temp doesnt go much over 70 ,is it a fairly easy job to replace
