I believe the D5 is twin turbo rather than the single turbo on the D3.
There was a polestar software upgrade available for the D3 but apparently its now gone missing from the Polestar website.Other companies will upgrade the D3 power but only polestar is officially recognised and approved by Volvo.

Even stranger - the Polestar upgrade is still available for the D3 AWD Auto to upgrade from 163bhp to 225bhp on the Swedish language version of the Polestar website but NOT the UK site..............I reckon it is just a Polestar website cockup on the dropdown menu options!!

Does anyone know what the difference is between the 163BHP and 215BHP 2.4L? Is it just a ECU change or are there mechanical differences? (Compression ratio, Turbos etc>>) Just wondering if the 163 could be remapped (polestar or third party) at a later date if needed?

Cheers
D5 has 2 turbos

Should just point out to you that the XC60 is not 4WD, it is AWD, which is very different. This may not have an impact for you but best to be clear on what you are buying

The other differences, apart from dual turbos, that I have heard of are - different head design, different compression ratio and of course different ECU mappings - I am sure that there are many more than this.

Polestar upgrade is available for the D3 AWD Auto to upgrade from 163bhp to 225bhp on the Swedish market, but only for MY10-11.
It`s not available för MY12.

Aye, my mistake AWD is OK. For my serious off roading ventures Ill stick to the Solihull 4WD option

you sure that's not a mistake? polestar.se shows the torque and power curves as 100% identical to the D5. since the D3 has only got a single turbo, but same displacement, it's got to be practically impossible to achieve exactly the same performance curves.

i think the compression ratio would be the same now as the bore and stroke are the same - at least they are on the volvo web site.

Agree.More than likely a typo on the Polestar site although the same performance stats could in reality be possibly achieved by 2 totally "different" engines.

I found, and whilst my findings may not have been exactly scientific that performance stats for example on D5 pre Polestar were virtually the same as D3

All the best
