Thanks for advice guys, My neighbour concurs with what you are saying. so I will get on with it. Come to think about it I doubt a larger tyre on the rim would fit into the boot space anyway. My previous cars all had full size alloy spares slung under the car in a cradle so I,m a newby on these Mickey Mouse wheels
Cheers

Reply to jimbg,
No the overall dia of the tyre is smaller than the overall dia of the car wheels,
my initial thoughts were that a smaller rolling dia would affect steering . Any thoughts ??

Well, in my previous post having said the spacesaver wheel was smaller, the question is by how much.

As I have both a full size spare and a spacesaver, it was a simple matter to do a side-by-side comparison. The spacesaver is about 10cm smaller both in diameter and in width. See attachments.

You wouldn't want to drive far on that spacesaver spare. My impression, based on a rough assessment, is that the size is at the lower end of the safe range for a spacesaver for the XC60. I guess the designers, in going for a spacesaver spare, decided to go for as much space saving as they safely could.

Yes I agree, thats what I have and frankly it worries me to have a car with one wheel smaller than the other three.
Firstly is this normal
Secondly is it safe?????

The point is that it is safe only for a limited distance at a limited speed and with gentle driving.

Anyone driven on a spacesaver?

Lethal.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spacesavers as 844 suggests could be bigger.

Has anone tried to fit a full size or a 'bigger safer spacesaver' in the spare wheel well?

Regards

I suppose the answers are self-evident, but anyway:

"Anyone driven on a spacesaver?"

Yes, but only for a couple of miles very carefully. I made no attempt ro evaluate the handling. Also, I think I was embarrassed about the appearance of the car with a spacesaver fitted - definitely spoils the looks!

"Has anone tried to fit a full size or a 'bigger safer spacesaver' in the spare wheel well?"

Yes in as much as I have compared the measurements. Only the small spacesaver will fit. There is no hope of fitting in a full size wheel. The rear underfloor area would have to be re-designed.

One of the safety issues with spacesavers is whether the axle loading is too close to the tyres maximum load rating. That's one reason why I am nervous about the XC60 spacesaver - not enough safety margin is my impression. (What is enough safety margin? - discuss).

Thanks for raising this, I must admit I had never looked at the space saver apart from checking I had one!

The thought of driving on that is rather concerning to say the least.

i would agree, and for that reason, it might be better to first have a go with the goo, rather than stick what looks like no more than a toy wheel on the car!
