Rear Windows
Well today was a lovely day, by that I mean an absolute total #*&$pile had decided to chuck a small paving slab through the rear window of my poor barge
1 by Mark Acton, on Flickr Police are coming to take statement tomorrow night, and thankfully have glass cover on the insurance, however mooching around parts listings there seems to be quite a few different glasses listed and not all are available from Volvo anymore, but apart from the with/without 3rd brake light are there any differences to the glass that will cause issue with fitting hopefully some of the resident guru's will know, to be honest I don't care what glass goes in as long as it fits ok anything else I can worry about later.

The two occasions I’ve needed new windscreens I’ve not done it through my insurance but instead used an independent specialist who has had no problem sourcing very cost effective pattern parts with the correct tint and which have stood up well to subsequent stone hits. I’m guessing your insurer’s specialists will know where to source such parts. You just need to watch they don’t try to write off the car on account of it. I was reliably informed the last windscreen replacement for which I paid £140 cash a few years ago would cost well over £600 to an insurance company!
An alternative might be to source a complete replacement tailgate from a donor car. |

That's vandalism which is usually covered on your insurance and will also cover paintwork damage caused by any glass shards or whatever that have scratched the paint as a result of the vandalism.
The good news is that if it is vandalism as far as the insurers go (which i'm pretty sure they'll agree it is), most insurers waive the excess on both the glass and the body repairs. Well worth checking your policy and/or contacting your insurers to say the car has been vandalised and what can they do to help you? Definitely agree with Marks comments about the perpetrators of dubious paternity! Maybe install a Japanese Akita burglar alarm, paving slab comes in, Akita lauches out like a rocket and chews the living sh!t out of the culprits ar5e!

Well I have not been able to speak to my insurance company, since not open on Sunday but will be calling them tomorrow, already spoken to glass company who were able to confirm they don't have one in stock but will get back to me tomorrow to see how to go forward.
2nd tailgate is an option I will think about if they can't get one, while I am still very angry paying excess doesn't bother me I just want it fixed. rest of the car is untouched aside from a scuff on the side window were the slab hit it after going through the rear screen before landing on the boot floor and spraying glass around the interior. I like the idea of the Akita, not the most practical pup to have living in a flat though haha Even if the Police do find anything, the git won't get anything for it anyway, and it takes a very special type of scum to do this type of thing, as far as i am aware not ****ed anybody off, i try to keep it parked out the way as much as I can. Will be keeping an eye out, looking into getting some cctv or mini hidden dash cams

Rear window
New rear windows are getting more and more difficult to get. I had mine broken by a small stone coming from a lawnmower.
Might be worthwhile to take the inner lining off yourself before you bring your car to the garage. Overall the windscreen fitter did a good job, but appearently had difficulties with the tailgate lining. It is now a few years later and the inner lining has come loose partially. By the looks of the black tacky stuff everywhere the fitter used this to "glue" the lining where the clamps where broken. Looking back it would have been better if I had taken the time to take off and reassemble the lining myself. You can take all the time you need whereas the windscreen fitter is usually on a tight schedule. |

I’ve only removed a tailgate lining once but I’m pretty sure the ‘dum dum’ adhesive is factory original. I did mine on a hot summer’s day so it came apart fairly easily. There is certainly a knack to removing the lining without damaging it. Once all the fixings are loosened you have to pull the bottom away from the tailgate slightly and push the upper part towards the hinges parallel to the glass if I remember correctly. Hopefully someone else can confirm.
