There is nothing special about the volvo oil, just made to spec for the lowest price that one of the big oil companies have tendered.
Buy from Fuchs/Gulf/Motul etc and you will get an extremely good oil equal to but most likely superior to the volvo oil.
Disagree with you again Andy, you say so much without backing up your facts .
Volvo gearbox oil has always been the very highest synthetic quality , that is why it is still going strong in volvo gearboxes after 25 years or more with the corresponding mileage .

What you say is no doubt true about the average car out there parked in every side road but volvo do things differently . How much volvo experience do you have anyway? You get what you pay for with volvo like most things in Life 👍

This is the only oil in the volvo chemicals catalogue which mentions the M90 Gearbox

1161645
A multigrade synthetic transmission oil intended for manual
transmissions in passenger cars.
The oil has very good low temperature characteristics and a
lowest flow point of at least -48°C.
The transmission oil is recommended for all model years of
types M45, M46, M47, M90 and M5M42 in S-/V40 with GDI
engine and of type M56, M58 and M59 up to and including
model year 1995.
Technical data
Quality: API GL-4
Volvo Std 1273,08 which
describes transmission oil
97308
Viscosity: SAE 75W
Color: Brown
Density: 885 kg/m³
Base: Synthetic
Lowest flow point -48 °C (104°F)
Viscosity at 40 °C: 67.8 mm² /s
Viscosity at 100 °C: 10.5 mm² /s
Important The oil is not tested or specified under
standards other than those indicated in this document.
In order to specify the correct oil for the car, always
check the owner’s manual for the car.

Thanks for replies guys

problem is that's another different number ?

The bottle i got from main dealer last year was part number 31280771 which the Skandix website agrees is the right oil

The bottles last week were part number 1161723 which is apparently wrong ??

Default this might clear things up

http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts...l-75w/1015329/

1161645 is discontinued so it looks like 31280771 is the replacement

It is possible that the oil has been superseded and decent long standing volvo dealer's parts manager Like FRF or Keith Price will be able to put you right with the correct oil . The general front counter hands although trained will not have experience of anything older than 2000 .

1161645 is NLA, 1161745 superseded it and as far as I know is no longer available apart from a few sellers on eBay in North America.

31280771, funnily enough, is very similar to Castrol Syntrans FE 75W in terms of viscosity at 40c and 100c main difference is the colour, this is an "Approved" oil. Look for "FORD WSS-M2C200-D2"

A quick search on the tinterwebs for "Volvo 97308", volvo spec for 1161645 brings up "Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID SAE 75W-80 synthetic manual transmission fluid". Please note this is a recommended oil and not an approved oil, this is also an API GL5 spec as opposed to GL4 which 1161645, 1161745 & 31280771 are. There aren't many oils which even state "Volvo 97308" let alone being recommended or approved.

You can also search for "Volvo 97309" which is the spec for 1161745 and you'll also only find mainly recommended oils.

The statement about the oil in Volvo gearboxes lasting for a long time because its "Volvo oil" that was earlier stated isn't particularly true, you have to take into account how the vehicle has been driven and owned. Mileage and age of a vehicle are only a rough indicator, compared to the time the vehicle has been used and how it's been used.

With mineral oils, they have a finite lifetime and it's nowhere near as long as many people would like to think. Likewise for synthetic oils, while they last longer than their mineral counterparts, their lifespan isn't infinite.

Regardless of what oil is eventually decided on, it will still need changing regularly which will also give an indication of the gearbox health if there's any swarf, dirt etc in there that shouldn't be.

Similar goes for the back axle, PAS and so on.

Well I had the same 31280771 as you last year, so when I saw this I went and had a chat with the guys at Holden Volvo in Norwich, who l know far to well!
So the correct spec is 1161645 but that is no longer available, it’s superseded by 31280771. That info got double checked by there UK technical support because I wanted to be sure what I was going to post is correct.
So yes looks like you have been given the wrong spec oil. 31280771 is the M90 spec for Volvo 940.
