Question XC70 - real world mpg?

Hello XC70 owners,
I am looking at getting a 2005 XC70 but am unsure about what engine/gearbox to get. I have a diesel auto A6 avant at present but don't mind having a manual if necessary.
What I am really wanting to know is what fuel consumption people are getting in real life driving. For example would a manual petrol be as fuel efficient as an auto diesel or would a manual diesel be worth getting over a diesel auto because fuel consumption is so much better?
Also, for owners who have petrol/diesel cars do they feel that they would have been better going for the other engine.

Thanks for any replies,

Jon.

The D5 in a front wheel drive is very good, dont know what the 4 be 4's are like, get one with an auto box. The A6 is the same as my 850 tdi, and the D5 is much quicker.

I've got a 2004 V70 D5 (front wheel drive only) with the Geartronic auto. Since picking it up 3 weeks ago it's averaging 35 mpg according to the computer. That's mostly commuting with a couple of longer runs, and a mixture of leisurely driving and a heavy right foot trying out the kick-down! I would expect it to be averaging around 40mpg when I start driving it properly!!!!

Thanks for the replies.

How have people got on with the petrol engines? I was wondering whether it was better to get the turbo petrol engine manual as they are cheaper to buy, petrol is cheaper from the pumps and they should be pretty quick.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jon.
