I have the exact same issue with navigation and unable to do diagnsotics. Went to official volvo dealer and waiting for the response from volvo factory on my issue regarding this problem with VCM. They said that in 9/10 they are able to solve this with help from volvo software diagnostics team. So i hope this will be in my case too 😃🤞🏼
If this wont work then probably VCM has to be replaced. So this is about 1000-1500€...

Anyone else manged to resolve this issue somehow? 😃

I also have the same issue. SatNav has been working on and off for a couple of years, no other issues. The dealer today said they could try a firmware upgrade, which would cost $3-400, and if that didn't work it would be a new VCM at $2100 (AU).
I find it amazing that they can't actually figure out what is wrong, and just expect the customer to cough up.
This has been the most unreliable car I have ever owned, by a long way. It's been offset by a 5 year warranty and some subsequent goodwill (engine rebuilt when 6 years old), but now that I have to pay for the repairs I think it's going to be time for something else. It still needs new pads and discs every year, yet my 6 year old VW has just had the first set replaced.

My 2016 XC90 has been just diagnosed with the same issue. I’m in the US and they want to charge me $1500. Do I need to get this fixed? Has anyone had any luck contacting Volvo corporate to get part or all of this covered? I have a gold package warranty which of course does not cover modules or tubing.

I am going to dealer on Monday. They will be working with volvo team from somewhere abroad via computer and diagnkstics connected, and they will try to fix it. Software fix. Otherwise they will be able to tell which part is not working and we will know the cause 🙌🏽. Still fingers crossed for software glitch 😃🤞🏼

I have the same issue with my 2016 XC90 D5.
The dealer and independent can connect to the VCM but they are unable to change any settings or perform upgrades.
Apparently it is usually caused by water ingress via the rear sunroof drain holes, but in my case there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of this.

This was first detected immediately after National Windscreens replaced the windscreen. They wanted to connect to the car to set the ADAS and said that they were blocked. My suspicion is that they damaged an electrical connection during the windscreen installation and this somehow affected the VCM.

My next step is to pull fuse 35 or disconnect the battery for while and see if it resets itself. No way of testing without going back to the dealer/independent unfortunately.

Looking forward to hearing how others have resolved it.

you need to check that it has the correct live feeds and earths and also see the shape of the communication signals with an oscilloscope. that should give a better idea of what is wrong..

Default VCM has to be replaced

Sooo after trying with software, they couldn't fix the issue... The only thing left is tonreplace the vcm. I am looking for an alternatives in europe, other than official volvo dealership. Any recommendations? And the price you paid for the installation of new VCM?
I heard there are some good services Poland, so i contacted a friend from there and we will see where i would get the best offer 🙌🏽

Doesnt matter where i will change the vcm i want to see the faukty unit if there are some water erosion marks. And is it possible to make the location of vcm water tight? To prevent haooening like this in the future?

So I guess this is quite common problem with 3G VCM modules. I have the same problem. Thus far I can confirm, that second hand VCM can be installed, only not sure why wifi isn't working. Maybe because of similar issue I had with mine original VCM. Don't have any other 3G VCM modules available to confirm is it bad VCM or something to do with software. Also to add, only back side is that car won't be able to use VOC and OTA updates by any means. I do believe , that there is advanced fellows out there, who are able to clone all data including cpu id, IMMO key etc from dead unit to second hand one. I have another plan - I will try to install LTE VCM, which might do the trick (will need another MAM). Won't be easy, as it also requires TEM wiring to be added into 36pin connector. After that I how to have WiFi running.

Does buying a secondhand one definitely work here and wouldn't cause issues when it comes to service time and VIDA connecting to it? Or an unknown right now. I'm not fussed about WiFi connectivity, but am because no obd connectivity currently or ACC etc.

Default Same...

Same issue here (occurred a month after renewing Volvo On Call). Main Dealer quote is £1904 for new VCM and coding. Volvo specialist says cannot fix even though they have access to VIDA.

Was a minor inconvenience with car not connecting via SIM in the boot (I connected car to my phone hotspot instead) and constant message on screen “On call service required”. Now car won't connect to wifi at all.

I'm willing to take the risk on a 2nd-hand VCM but not if I can't find anyone to code it to the car.

Unlikely to get manufacturer contribution either as although mileage is 41k, car is 2016 (MY17).

Has anyone tried to replace the VCM battery to resolve the issue?
