Best way is to rub off the chrome and reveal the nice black plastic underneath

Someone here mentioned using tape to remove it. However when I tried it, the tape was leaving to much residue for my liking, so I ended up using a sponge and kept rubbing

Metal polish is good for rubbing off fake chrome on plastic.

It polishes the chrome off and leaves a nice shiney black surface underneath.

Either that, or give them a light sand and a spray with gloss black.

They do look sh1t as they are just now.

I would go for full refund, plus return cost covered.

If you keep them and need to repaint them, I would be looking at getting half the purchase price back, at least, as you will have to pay for paint and spend YOUR time doing the work properly.
