Its part of your fuel tank emission control Evaporative system (EVAP). In short the is a canister between your fuel tank and the inlet manifold. As the temp in the tank increase it creates Hydro Carbon Loaded vapours that would normally vent to the atmosphere.
To prevent this the vapours are taped off to the carbon canister where they are suspended by the carbon canister. Under part load conditions the ECU will activate a valve which will open and the engine vacuum will draw the fumes from the canister into the manifold where they are burnt. System dependant the can be 2 valves in the system, a purge valve which controls the flow of fumes from tank to canister and the inlet control valve controlling the extraction from canister to inlet manifold. The next step in this system was to introduce a fuel tank leak detection system utilising and air pump and a pressure sensor to check for a drop in pressure over 15 minutes to confirm the integrity of the entire EVAPS system. |
