Lightbulb Pre-Facelift vs Facelift Headlights?

Hello All,

I'm in the process of ordering new headlights for my 2008 S40, I noticed that the 2004-2007 models have headlights using a horizontal connection where as mine has a vertical connection on the back of the headlight assembly to plug them in.

Is there a difference between the two? Is the wiring different? Or am I missing something completely here...

Here are two examples:

2004-2007 models:

2008+ models:

Any advice would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Jordan

Yes, there's a difference between the two. They are a completely different shape! You can't use 2004-2007 lamps on your 2008 unless you want to change the front end bodywork of the car to match.

Wow... They look identical to me. Perhaps I need to arrange for an eye test sooner than I thought!

Thanks for the quick response and information.

Looking at the front, you will imedately notice difference - old shape had the parking light bulb inside of the long beam reflector, while the FL model had a vertical shape separate parking light separate between high beam reflector and low beam projector. Also - as mentioned, shape of whole lamp is slightly different, but you wont notice it when lamp is actually out of the car.

Perfect! Thank you for all the information. Does anyone know if you have to get new headlights coded when installing them?

To my knowledge, not unless they are factory bixenons (and even then its not matter of "coding" as light allignment via software).

Thanks alot! I've ordered them now so I'll have to wait a couple of days for them to arrive and then I'll update the thread with how it went, I'm sure it will be fine. (Famous Last Words!)

Headlights Just arrived! And I believe they're Bi-Xenon/HID so can't be fitted in my S40 2008 with Halogens....

yep, OEM bixenons allright.... How much did you pay for them, dont mind me asking? ususlly those are much more expensive and harder to obtain so either seller had no clue what he had or you got (un)lucky.
Pity you cant use them directly - would be great upgrade for your vehicle as halogens on those are cr*p ....

Got them for £220 for the pair, they're in pretty good condition (Includes the Ballast!). Slight marking on one of the lenses but I see them going for £230 per headlight usually, I contacted the seller and informed him that he made a mistake as he was selling them as halogens, he said not to worry and that I can just sell them on. I gave my local Volvo Dealership a call and they advised it's not possible to swap out Halogens for Xenons due to the Suspension Auto-adjust feature on the S40/V50... Not sure if there is a way around this as I'd quite happily upgrade to the Xenons over the Halogens.
