Thanks for the info Clan, the plastic outer is cracked though not melted. Will have a proper look when I can get to work on it.

not in this instance, the earths are fine. the plastic outer sleeve was actually damaged, thus putting a kink in the inner cable....thus locking the box in first.

I do appreciate its only a case of replacing the cable, but im leaving that to someone with smaller fingers than my arthritic ones.
I know my technical limits when it comes to maintenance, and find it less expensive to go beyond that.
