Default 2003 Volvo V70 Auxiliary Belt Snapped?

So, I have a Volvo V70 D5 SE (2003). Today it "died". I'd just turned into a side road and it kind of did a jolt and cut out (A bit like when you put it in too high a gear and stall). It cruised to a stop rather than just suddenly stopping.
When the recovery guy got there he pointed to a broken belt and was like your timing belt has snapped. As the main dealer said it could potentially cost about £5,500ish to rebuild the engine I told recovery driver to just take the car home (and I stayed at work and cadged a lift home later).

I have CCTV covering the drive so I took a look to see if the recovery guy managed to get the car on my drive or just left it on the road. I was surprised to see that he managed to reverse the car back on the drive. I didn't think you could bump start a car with a snapped timing belt?

The belt he pointed to was the auxiliary belt - from what I could see, it hadn't snapped completely, just a section of it was missing and frayed on the part I saw. I didn't see the timing belt, but the recovery driver basically said that a part of the auxiliary belt would have gone into the timing belt and knackered the engine up.

I've not had a chance to take a look yet as when I got home it was dark with torrential rain, but could there be a chance that the timing belt and engine are fine given that he actually managed to somehow start the car (I'm guessing bump started as I'm on a hill), and reverse it back onto the drive? Could the auxiliary belt potentially be just changed? I'm guessing I'd have been going no more than about 20-30mph when it went as I'd literally turned into the side road.

Thanks

If the timing belt had snapped he/you couldn't start the engine no matter what you tried. It would however be wise to at least check the timing belt for damage and check the timing is correct as it could possibly have "jumped" a couple of teeth if part of the auxiliary belt has got to it.

Well the recovery guy could well be correct. Although how on earth he managed to get it started and reversed onto the drive is beyond me.

I cannot find any remnants of the timing belt at all. The aux belt hasn’t snapped but is split and lengths come away. I tried starting the car in gear and it lurched forwards but wouldn’t start.

Engine stuffed do you think? Don’t know whether I should just scrap it now or see if someone wants it as spares or repairs.

I reckon your timing belt went first and then took out half of your aux belt.

If no timing belt, DO NOT try to start or turn over the engine

Head off job to check for damage. You could be lucky...

The engine being stuffed is pretty much guaranteed given the attempted starts with no timing belt present.

Happened to me in March (V70 D5 2002), after 6 months, i have car back. Tension wheel on aux belt failed and the result was, that i had to replace head and everything inside (smaller belt was tangled into timing belt and it snapped, so the pistons hitted valves etc). Fortunately, my coleague offered me help, so in totall, it costed me 1 500,-EUR. Of course, the head is used, but i wouldnt bother, because it is old car.. Its good to find volvo specialist, and check every single wheel there, it is possible, that AC compressor bearing is worn and can get stuck.

2014. There’s a thread I started about it, original garage I took it to cocked it up, and had to replace the engine. He probably never bothered to replace the timing belt on that even though he said he did.

I wonder did the recovery guy actually start it or just move it with the starter motor?
