Hey Laney that's exactly the kind of info I'm after.Still strange how the paints just lifting clean off the bare metal.I really can't see any grinding or sanding marks on the bare metal below,It had been oversprayed at some point.I wonder if the overspray reacted with the original paint and caused it to lift?
You can tell I know nothing about spray.
Gratefull Brian.

Bear in mind that the coach builder who stretched it will have had to cut and extend the roof and then spray it. So it depends on their processes and how well it was done.

I seem to remember finding out that mine was straight from the swedish factory?
The vin states made in sweden.I have been hunting to see where I got the info but I'm having a senior moment(No disrespect to the the older members)I'm sure someone clarified it was a full blown volvo stretch job.As in full length roof and full length floor. No added bits or welded extra bits.

So not the usual saloon in silver blue or silver imported and chopped with a stitched bit in the middle

The only bodged bits by volvo are the middle doors. The front half of the middle door is from the hinged part of a rear door and the rear half of it is from the rear of a front door. They then weld a single skin to it.Not sure but I think the window is a one off special order item.
Is it torslanda or am I going crazy???

I think I've been breathing to many vapours from the epoxy resin at work today,Acres of the damn stuff to level,,,,Yukkie old stuff and dodgy if not handled correctly.

Thanks though Brian.

I think they are all pukka factory Volvo built jobbies, but AFAIK they take nearly complete saloons from the production lines, chop them in half and and stretch them.

Ok so those with a fragile disposition don't look at these pictures. Not very pretty!looks like a war zone.

Not to happy with the quality on most of the pictures but one or two show just how bad it is.And when they first started bubbling there wasn't any rust?Just bare metal with no primer at all evident.Even the bits of paint I snapped off are black on the bottom. If you look at the bits I took off there appears to be white in the middle layer?Just realised I didn't take any shots of the bits so I will try tomorrow to get a close up shot of a few chips.

Really hope the spray guy finds time soon as our summer doesn't seem to be happening this year and the patches are starting to rust quite a bit.

Not sure if you can see stretch marks in the steel underneath or not?You could actually feel the rough lines when the paint first lifted.

@^^^^LankyTim I'm sure I was told by someone that proper factory built ones from volvo were one piece floor and one piece roof. Not the cut or stretch method.Just can't seem to find the info.Niether me or the mot guy could find a join in the floor panel. And believe me he looked real hard as he was convinced it would be an added bit. There are strengtheners under the floor but they are like strips of channel welded with the "U" bit flat against the floor.

Regards Brian.

The last picture shows best the texture that was on the bare metal and it also shows the white layer in the middle of the paint layer. As bad as it looks it is only surface rust and there isn't any panel damage which I expected to be the problem.I thought maybe the roof had been stomped on and half a bucket of filler was used to hide the dents but so far not a sign of a dent.

That paint looks a bit thick. I think there is a bit of filler on there or at least a real thick coat of filler primer.

If the filler has popped off the metal it will start to corrode if any moisture gets to it. It will stay hidden for a while and then go bad all of a sudden.

Brian

Are there cracks in the paint in the gutter rails? It looks to me like the water has got under the paint, capillary <sp> action, and then the rust has formed cracking the paint from below. Doesn't explain the ones in the middle of the roof though.

Well heres the strange thing! The rail gutters look quite good except where the paint has cracked above and peeled away towards them.
When the cracks that appear are lifted there is no rust underneath? The rust you can see is as a result of being left open to the elements by me.So just bare clean undented metal?

Cracks just suddenly appear here there and every where.
I spoke to a chap tonight who suggested it may have started to lift if the last respray reacted with the original paint?
It did look like it has had a rough spray over,Maybe just to tidy it up.

I may have to find someone who understands the complexity of different types of spray.
I remember watching american hot rods and even they had a complete car respray react as they used the wrong basecoat. They ended up stripping back to the bare metal again.

My paint is thick and snaps very easily,It has a dark layer at the bottom but has a white layed in the middle. It always curls up at the outer edges.

I have told the sprayer if he needs to spend extra to neutralise the metal by applying a special coat then he can.Not worth doing if it's only going to peel again.

He has said he needs it in his spray booth to get the temperature up or it won't key to the metal.

I'm really hoping the paint in the rails is original as it would be a nightmare to rub down properly.I did wonder about getting that bit fine grit blasted if need be as that would reach the harder to reach bits.

Thank you all for your suggestions as it helps me think through just what may have happened.

Regards Brian.
