a whole host of things can cause this , anything to do with boost pressure :

leaks in vacuum units or hoses
Turbo pressure hose leaks
intercooler leak ,
boost control valve

etc etc
Vacuum pump etc etc

Ah - didn't spot that.

However I feel that it is actually very likely for a MY2005, especially if it uses engine oil. It could be leaking from the turbo seals into the air charge and that will result in coked-up turbo vanes. It will also fill the inlet pipe downtream of the EGR plenum with goo, which would be a clue. Take a look inside there - its very easy to get to.

Smile Redex DFP Cleaner solved Pressure and limp problems

I had this problem for months and checked and replaced many items. As a last resort, and due to a 50% off deal at Tesco, I decided to try Redex. Did the trick and has never gone into limp again. Also feel an increase of power. I added half a bottle of injector cleaner to 50 litres of fuel. I did that twice. The big change was using a full bottle of Redex DPF Cleaner to 50 litres of fuel. Problem sorted.

As hard as it may be to believe, my 2004, 2.4 XC90 has never run better since doing this.

Seriously ? I was thinking of popping in some DPF every so often

Thank you for all your replies. I also tried some redex and turbo cleaner that you place in the fuel. Just starting with the easiest fixes first.

That seemed to have reduce the occurrences. It disappeared for a few weeks and came back again today. I’m going to add some more and also clean the boost control valve.

Will update and continue monitoring before performing more expensive repairs

Thanks again for everyone’s input. Very much appreciated and confident will find the solution. At the minute, a code reader reset seems to be keeping the gremlin at bay
