Default how many blown headgaskets/snaped cambelts

hello to all 740/940 d24tic owners.i have owned my 940 TDI for 10 years it has 163000miles . i have came across quite a few people who have had these cars where a blown head gasket or snapped cambelt has destroyed these engines . i have not let a cambelt do more than 60000 miles .is there a critical time to replace the head gasket say around 250000 miles . all addvice is most welcome to get some data on this issue

Hi, not saying its wrong, but I've never heard of this (changing head gasket to prevent it blowing)
The key to longevity with these engines seems to be following the well trodden path of regular on-the-dot oil changes using a semi synth oil (dissipates heat build up from the turbo) use of proper volvo coolant, allowing adequate warm up time before caning it, and of course regular belt changes. TBH head gasket is such a horrible job I wouldnt do it unless it needed doing.

thank you for your comments. yes it seems changeing the head gasket will not prolong the life of the cylinder head i have seen what is involved with that job not a nice job to do . i have changed the oil and filter useing millers xfe semi synthetic and vw man filters .i have just had my 3rd cambelt on and waterpump replacsd this time.all genuine parts . coolant also replaced at 3 year intervals. its just i have come across at least 5 of these engines with blown headgaskets . i am most gratefull for all coments made .thanks again

Possibly pattern headgaskets, as you know the proper ones are steel.

Only had a pattern headgasket go - fitted before I had it. Thankfully I noticed straight away before it overheated - these heads don't seem to be much good if they have been well coooked!

Gasket replaced with an expensive Volvo part and never had another problem.

Key seems to be - regular oil changes, semi synth. oil, and proper coolant mix for a long trouble free life.
