S80 V8 front subframe
2007 S80 4.4 V8
Just had my car back from a service and been advised my front subframe is corroded and will ideally need replacing in the near future. Would anyone know if the subframe for the V8 is shared with any other engines or where I could get a hold of a decent replacement unit? Or if there's any other options such as getting a frame fabricated. |

Unless you've had a recent advisory at an MOT for corrosion I shouldn't take much notice. I'd have a good look at it yourself as well before getting into the expense of replacement.

Its a 2007 car, so it wouldn't be viable to spend that money on it. It'd be much cheaper to underseal the car yourself using a product like Dinitrol (Rust proofing). Its a messy job, as you have to sand/wire brush the areas that have rust on them for the best results. There's professional businesses that'll do the job for you, but I wouldn't think that'd be cheap either due to the size of the vehicle. However, its probably more cost effective than replacing the subframe if you plan on keeping the car for a while.
Note, this only applies if its surface corrosion. If there's holes in the subframe, then that's a whole different story (Welding etc involved, more expense). If you do decide to get the car undersealed, then don't use rubber based products because they trap moisture & that subsequently causes rust over time.

A subframe on a 2007 car being corroded to the point of needing replacement is unlikely, but it may be something worth checking further. It may have been missed on MOT checks, as the undertray would likely have been hiding it, and the MOT testers don't remove undertrays etc (even to check MOT-specific items like bushes). Has the car spent any time in the past by the sea, or in Scotland where they salt the roads far more than in England? And what's the mileage? If it turns out you do need a replacement, a 2nd had one from a breaker would be the best route. Not sure if they are the same for the different engines, but a look at the catalogue on Volvopartswebstore will confirm the part number for the V8 and you can then compare with ones being sold on Ebay etc.

The paint is always going to be flaking off on a 2007 sub frame, so as long as the structural integrity is not compromised and you cant stick a screwdriver through the metal, i would treat it with rust-converter and it is probably fine (I have done this myself to preserve my 2009 XC70 subframe) |
