Default As I quietly sit here waiting for Volvo On Call...

Had the car nearly a year now. Actually booked in for 1st service in a couple of weeks time.

But just had to press On Call button for the 1st time. Driving rush to pick my daughter up from dancing, and massive grating noise.

Sounds like front o/s, but could be rear o/s - difficult to tell.

First thought was stone stuck in brakes (and it still could be), so tried the usual forwards-brake-hard, backwards-brake-hard. No, still there

VOC had location, but not far details (which is odd. I am registered on VOC).

They advised the same procedure, but got a van called out. Have tried 3 or 4 times now, but still there, so will wait. Don't want to cause any more damage

Just got about 45 mins to wait now time to have a play with AA I guess. Never really used that in the just year either

Hope you were recovered in good time and it’s nothing too serious.

If JCBrown has a similar experience with VOC to me, then he may well still be waiting for them to turn up :-)

Apologies, been rather busy

VoC turned up in about 45mins. Only ever had to call a recovery vehicle out 3 times (including this time) in my life - 1st took about 2 hours, 2nd was about 30 mins (they put a rush on as my Step Father was in the car who suffered badly with Parkinson's). So impressed with this time

He promptly lay on the floor and checked each wheel/disk - no scoring. I had had a look (not as thorough as his) and had not seen any either

He asked me to move car forward - screeeeeechhhhhh!

Back on the floor he went. Decided backing plate on Front N/S was catching on the disk. He gave it a good twist, and Robert was my Mothers Brother

As to why the backing plate had bent? No idea. It was fine when I had been out earlier, it was fine for the first few hundred yards of the drive. I didn't notice anything unexpected in that time: No pot-holes, no bumps, clatters, No speeding over speed bumps, ...

He put it down as a temporary repair, shook hands, and off he went. Very good service, and nice guy

I had this exact same noise from FNS wheel on and off since got car 6 months ago. Really loud. Had it all last week, but hours before your post about bending thin metal plate at the top behind brakes I had done the same & it fixed the noise (just pushed away slightly, literally millimetres). I think snow on drive had slightly bent it the other week maybe. Saved a trip to dealer. It's the most man-ly mechanical thing I have ever done...! Worth knowing if anyone else has what sounds like brakes are squeaking!
