Weird rattle from near side rear corner!
So recently bought myself a 2004 C70 T GT, 2l petrol auto. It's immaculate, low mileage, full service history etc etc.
But it has a really strange metallic rattle when on slightly rough roads, most noticeable at speeds around 20-40 mph and I can't work out what it is, it comes from the near side rear corner (back passenger side in my world ) So far I have checked the disk pads to make sure they are firm, replaced the zipties holding up the rear section of the exhaust with a proper hanger clamp. Taken it in to the garage, who initially thought it was the handbrake drum, but after bleeding the brake fluid and checking it all realised it wasn't (thanks a bunch £40 for new fluids to be added ). He now thinks it is a loose worm-drive that operates the roof but I can't find any reference to those anywhere so I'm not convinced he knows! Does any one have any suggestions or experience of a similar issue? thanks in advance!

Rattle from rear
Cannot offer much more than has already been done but when I got around to looking for a similar annoying noise on my V70 I checked the exhaust mountings and also looked for a loose internal baffle or a heat shield.
In the end it turned out to be rear brake pad movement. Even replacing the pins and springs made no difference as they were loose again once the brakes had been applied and the car run for a short distance. Regarding the garage suspecting that the handbrake drum was loose. The drum is integral with the disk and is held in place by the wheel bolts. Have you checked if anything inside the boot is loose? Also, how loud is it as I can only hear my rattle when the window is open?

Apart from the above I would remove the interior side trim in the boot and check everything is secure - there is a lot of kit in there. I had an annoying rattle in mine when the roof was closed. It was the little flap that stands up and then closes the gap when the roof is open. Although it is part of the trim it was a very loud metallic rattle. The flap is spring loaded but the spring was weak.

The boot is completely empty, and you can hear the noise both inside and outside the car. its almost as if it is coming from under the roof storage bit, but above the inside of the boot! Is there anything in between there? And if so how can I access it to have a nose about? Cheers

Hmm I'll test with the roof down as that isn't something I've tried yet, good idea I'll try to remove the trim and have a look behind there as well, thanks for the suggestions.

Not sure if the C70 is the same but the light clusters on the V70 are held in with nice little nuts which are oh so easy to drop down into the inner wing never to be seen again. Tracing rattles is a nightmare job, I did have some small success by getting someone else to drive while I sat in the back moving about to try to locate the source of a squeak.
Best of luck!

One other thing to check. Have a look at the shock mounts both top and bottom they could be loose although I would think they would rattle at all speeds.
There is nothing between the hood storage compartment and the boot - just the boot trim panel. Not sure if you are aware, but the roof can be stopped at any point in its opening and closing cycle without detriment.

More of a knock than a rattle though, but worth checking. I had these go on my 1998 V70 Tdi Estate, and couldn't work out what it was at first. They are a bit of s0d to fix if it is those, but it is possible without special tools..
