Just to answer the flurry of PMs (does this cancel out that pint I owe you for "borrowing" the steering wheel pic Steve? )...

As far as I'm aware...

...a *conical* flanged turbo (15G - 850 T-5, and very early 16Ts - not sure if that's some 850Rs, all 850Rs, or all 850Rs and early C/S/V70 T5) will bolt straight up to a 940 TD04 downpipe. The only mod work required is re-clocking the housings, and adjusting the actuator bracket to match. Just make sure the bracket is stout enough!

I think all 15Gs were conical-flanged, so Mr 740T should be good to go.

As far as I can see from the pictures, that's a straight flanged 16T, so it won't bolt straight up to a 940 DP...sorry Des. Having said that, I have a matching DP flange here, so a bit of work with a cutting disc and a magical metal glue machine, and you're in business...

The mythical conical-flanged 16T does exist...a friend used to own one. I'm just not sure exactly what it came on. My vague memory is that it's only early 850Rs. The fact that Steve is an 850R hoarder and his 16T appers to be straight flanged would appear to support that suggestion...although now he's said that, he'll probably tell us it came from an C/S/V70!

At the risk of insulting your intelligence...are you sure? My info was that they're all conical...and the two are very similar...

EDIT: I may very well be insulting your intelligence, sorry. I just read that 1994 was the last year for conical flanges. If that's true, how did my mate (Dokeh, since you're here, Dave!) get a conical 16T, since the 850R was 1996MY, wasn't it?

I just found this. Conical on the left, "straight" on the right.



Of course they're both "straight" housings...so referring to the one with the solid DP flange as "straight" is a bit misleading. "Straight floating DP flange" and "straight solid DP flange" might be more accurate descriptions. I *really* should be in the pub, rather than writing this nonsense!

I haven't yet come across a conical flange, in 3 15G turbos (850 sourced if it makes a difference).

My understanding was they were only on very early 850 T5s. By the time the T-5R and 850R came out I believed they were all straight flange, and were through all the 850 range then, even up to the 850R manual's 16T. I didn't think the angle flange 16T came in till the S70/V70, but then I know less about the 16T.

Early T-5R's did have the conical flange but towards the end of 1995 they changed to the straight flange husing.The angle flange was introduced in 1998 with the arrival of the ME7 engines.

Interesting. Question is, then, where did my chum get his conical 16T from? I'll see if he knows...
