Default New B230 Engine???

Hi all,

Can you still get new bare B230et/ft lumps from volvo? The reason being is that my lovely old 740 Turbo is getting a little tired now and I was going to get the bottom end completely rebuilt. But I was gonna price up a new bare engine (No auxillaries) and compare the two.
I use to work for vauxhall and the trade club had big discounts on the older engines ie: 1.6 8v for £500+vat!
Wasn't sure if volvo would do the same for older parts?
Any ideas would be grateful!

I would guess you could still get one , but is your engine worn? Whats wrong with it , what do you mean a little tired? I wouldnt be surprised if when it was dismanted there would be no measurable wear to the bores or crankshaft . Best leave it alone if its running ok and not using much oil ... These engines dont really wear out , you have the best pistons you can have which are expensive Mahle and also a hardened crankshaft .
If you do happen to have a problem with the engine it would certainly be worth risking fitting a second hand one and carrying on another 200000 miles or so ..

A 740 Turbo I bought had recently had a reman***tured engine from volvo fitted, If i recall the invoice for the Long Block, was something like £1350.

I'm sure they might still be available, ask rufe on here for a quote for one.

Probably a typo that the boards auto censor has picked up on would be my guess - Mike

i just did a quick check,

B230ET - Expired
B230FT/GT - Backorder (available) P/n: 5003653 exchange unit

unfortunately the good news ends there, as your looking at a retail price of just over £2500 including vat, our trade price is only 5% less (hardly any margin in engines at all from volvo), plus delivery, and return of the old unit as its an exchange item.

These new engines do not include flywheel casing, flywheel, thermostat, water pipes, manifolds, fuel pump, starter motor, distributor, alternator, crank ventilation.

Wow!

Just for curiosity,Rufe, how much is the 3 litre six (960 type)?

Luckily I don't need one, but it would be good to know.

Cheers,

T

Default New B230 Engine???

Hi all,

Thank you for your help. Phoned my local engine specialist who is rather good at rebuilds, He is currently working out a price for the various parts for the rebuild. Although, he's having trouble getting a price for the pistons for some reason, Will let you know how I get on!

Thumbs up Just a thought...

Not sure if you've had this job done now, but have you considered a used B230FK engine - these are identical to the B230FT but run at lower boost (the turbo actuator is different). Otherwise its all the same - stronger late block, plus piston oil squirters too! Everything is the same - cylinderhead, pistons, crank, even the camshaft (T profile).

I picked one up on eBay for my old 944 a few years ago - paid £150 for it including delivery - and it was a 90K engine with FVSH. He'd pulled it out to fit a diesel engine. When I stripped it down it was like new - no wear at all. Even the engine paint was fresh.

All you'd need to do is use your existing turbo and ancilliaries and you'd have an as good as new engine.
