Mine is running fine, but I would like to be able to introduce some sort of preventative maintenance. If this box is good for a lot of miles, I am very happy to keep the car. Only a Land Rover Defender can beat it at its own game. It is such a good package. Mine has only covered 91,000 miles and the box feels fine.
just been reading all the comments on here ... i have a 2003 xc90d5 auto ... just been told theres a rattle in gearbox underload ... but the car drives lovely .. annoying thing is .. only done 44 thousand miles .. full main dealer history . as well.... any body any ideas ? ... what it could be ?... or is the garage over reacting ...

I'm no mechanic but is there ANY reason at all why its not a good idea to change the gearbox oil regularly? My xc90 has done 80,000 miles and as far as I know the oil has never been changed. I was thinking of doing it then read posts suggesting it can bring on issue...but why?

On high mileage boxes that have never been previously flushed/changed the oil change process can dislodge accumulated crap/debris and block the small passageways in the autobox.

That's the theory but personally I don't subscribe to it - if you have a box with say 150k on it I would change the oil just the same - and perhaps check it after a few thousand miles to see if it has gone black again.

If it was the engine oil we are talking about, you wouldn't think twice.
