You won't believe what's causing the issue, but it's the fuel pump in the tank not being able to provide suficcient fuel to the engine. Every time there is a rise in rpms the car feels sluggish. The new unit costs about 450€ but I got a used one with only 57000 kms which I bought for 150€.
